I got a DUI about a year and a half ago (Yes, I know very stupid) I switched insurance companies after it happened to get a better rate. I am with Progressive now and paying about $190/month. I live in NC and drive a 10 year old Jeep Wrangler, I have an excellent driving record with no tickets or accidents, the only thing on my record is the DUI. Does anyone have any advice on which insurance company might offer the best rates or if there is anything I can do to lower my rate? Is there any way to get coverage without them checking my driving record and seeing my DUI???
Thanks

You need to be in a high risk company. Progressive is not a high risk company (I sell it) And no matter where you get your insurance they will run your social and DL # and pull up your record because that plays a major role in what your premium is. I would call a local independent agent and ask them to get you a quote in a high risk company.

i dont think there is any way you can get coverage without them seeing you dui. but you never know it took them almost a year to notice that i got one… but by that time i just wrote my car over to my husbands name so he wouldnt have to pay for my high insurance. i was thinking about looking into no name companies and seeing how much they will charge me. you should do it to. i hear that if you just grab the phone book and call some little companies you can get really cheap insurance and they are pretty good to you.

Try GMAC…thats the only company I know of that may beat Progressive. And No, they are going to run your record, no way around it.

Ok no one is going to write insurance for you by not checking your MVR. If the agent does, then once your policy gets to the company you will get cancelled. Based on your question it seems like you don’t take the DUI that seriously, but from an insurance perspective you are very likely to be involved in an accident. That is the reason premium is so high. You might try to get your insurance with same company that has homeowners if you have that. NC insurance rates are pretty regulated, and you might even be in the state rate program and not even know it.
Best to drive carefully now, get a ride if you drink, and just wait it out.
Also, make sure you keep your credit score good because that does play into insurance rates.

expect to pay what you are paying now for another 3 and a half years.
if you happen to find a company that has a lower premium than progressive then you are compromising your coverage.
you go into a bucket sub standard insurance company, you get what you pay for.
you know that commercial where they are like, unless its a ficus we wont cover that damage, or unless the vandals spelled your entire name not a nick name they wouldn’t cover it.
THESE COMPANIES REALLY DO EXIST!
maybe not to that extent, but like i said before, you get what you paid for.
be careful.

Try progressive or any other local high risk insurance companies.
