My youth pastor is selling me his 2004 Dodge Stratus, and we’re planning on going to the DMV tomorrow morning to have the title signed over. Currently, my mom pays for my car insurance every month, and the car I’ve been driving is in her name. If I want to put the new car in my name, can my mom still pay for my insurance or do I have to be able to pay for it in order to have the title signed over to me?

your mom can still pay the insurance with out being on the title.

Nope – You’ll need insurance to probably get it titled. Not to have it signed over to your ownership. That’s a requirement in some states like Kansas.

You don’t need insurance on the car to title it, only to register it. Every insurance company I know of automatically provides several weeks of overlap insurance when you purchase a new car to give you time to dispose of the old one. Just showing your existing insurance card should be sufficient to get the new car registered.

No, you only need your own insurance to drive it or to register it.
If your mom’s willing to write a check to pay for your insurance, great. ANYONE can write the check. But the policy will have to be in your name – the name on the title, registration, and insurance all have to match.

I would get insurance before you go just to be safe.
