my girlfriend is planning on buying a new car. She currently has insurance on a different car, how does one get insurance on the new car to drive off the lot from Vegas to our home town about 100 miles away. We know its illegal for her to drive anywhere in a car without insurance. She may buy from a dealership or private party.

If you could provide answers to both scenarios (dealer or owner) that would be very helpful. thank you for your time

Call your insurance company and give them the new vehicle information and they’ll change the car on the policy. If you have an online account for your insurance you can switch it yourself. All you need is the year, make, model, vin # and the leasing company information.

Most companies will extend coverage from the old car to the new one as a courtesy for 30 days. She should call her agent to make sure though.

The only scenario I know is:
She phones her insurer with the VIN off of the new car and gets covered.
This she does about 10 mins previous to driving off.
She could also phone them now and confirm what I said.
