Next week I can get my licens, and I already have a car so the only thing left would be car insurance. I asked my mom, who is making me pay for it, how much it would be to be put on her insurance. She said $108 a month!!! I know that I will not be able to afford that. I have enough money right now for about 14 months and that is it. I already have a job, but all the money I make goes toward tuition for private school(long story). Can I have my own isurance plan? Do I have to be under a parent? what are my options? Please help. I have until newt Friday to figure it out.

It is going to be much more expensive to have your own insurance plan. The insurance company will be offering your mother a discount adding you/your vehicle.

It may be a better option to insure it in her name and put you on the policy as a casual driver, if your mom will consent to this.

Not to mention you must be 18 years of age.

    Good luck!

Getting your own insurance will be MORE expensive than adding you to your parent’s policy. Listen to your mom.

Congratulations on (almost) getting your license and having a car. Yay for you!

$108 for a newly licensed, young driver is an EXCELLENT rate. Your Mom gets you qualified for a much better rate than you could get on your own. Trust me on this.

First I’d recommend you check on the rate that your Mom got. Make sure that they counted any discounts you are entitled to (good student, anti-lock brakes, etc.).

If The $108 figure is correct and you cannot afford that then I suggest you get a second part time job. Perhaps you could babysit or cut lawns or earn extra money in some other way.

Your other option is to wait to get licensed until you can save up some more money, but if you have enough for 14 months now why not go ahead, and then use that 14 months to save for when that time is up?

Another poster suggested that you title the car in your Mom’s name and have you added as an occasional driver. Sorry, but that’s not a good idea. First, if you have as many drivers as cars you’ll get rated as the main driver anyway. Second, it puts your Mom at risk for what you do with your car, as she can get sued if you hurt someone. – not fair.

I wish there was an easy answer for you, but there isn’t. I hope you find a way to make it work!

$108 a month for a newly licensed driver – that can’t be right. I think it would be a lot more.

Keep in mind, if the car is titled to YOU, the insurance has to be in your name, too. But you aren’t going to find your own policy for that low a price.

You CAN have your own policy. Go talk to local agent to get quotes. But it’s only going to be more than that, because as a newly licensed driver, you are HIGH RISK.
