Okay, this is the deal,

I have full coverage car insurance. This means that the insurance will cover me, if I have an accident that is my fault or if someone else hits me & it’s not my fault. I also have insurance that covers me if someone breaks into my car & steals any kind of important items in my car.

The Question…
I sometimes let other people drive my car, to run errands for me (like driving my car home, cause I’m too sleepy to drive or I’m super busy & need an item from the store & I hand my keys to a licensed driver).

I talked to my insurance company & was told they do not have coverage that will cover other drivers unless they are listed under my coverage. The problem – I don’t want to list everybody in my family or all my friends.

Isn’t there insurance coverage that will cover anybody driving my vihecle as long as they are older than 25 & has a valid license? If so, what’s the name of this type coverage – I nd to know the name b4 I call other companys. thanks

Usually with full coverage, it covers other people driving your car as long as they are licensed and have your permission to drive it. If they live in your household, then they need to be added to the policy. This may vary though by either insurance company or state legislation. The only way to know for sure would be to contact your insurance company and ask them. I do not believe there is a separate insurance for other drivers outside your home. HTH

Most insurance companies frown on letting people borrow your vehicle. It is allowed, but if they have an accident in your vehicle, your rates and accident record will be effected. You really should not let anyone else drive your vehicle. If a friend of family member killed someone else in an accident, you would be sued because it was your vehicle and your insurance and you that allowed them to take your vehicle.

Insurance goes with vehicles, not with drivers. Anyone driving with your permission will be covered. Except for children with licenses under the age of 18 and living at your address, you don’t need to list any additional drivers on the policy. If you have an agent telling you these things, it’s time to find a new agent because he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

    OK, here’s the deal:

“Full coverage” isn’t an insurance term. It means 10 different things to 10 different people.

You need to ask your agent. But, in general, all household members should be listed on your policy if they occasionally drive a car. If someone drives your car more than once a month, like a girlfriend or parent or something, they should ALSO be listed as a driver.

MOST policies – not all, mind you, but most – will cover anyone using your vehicle, who has a license, who IS NOT A HOUSEHOLD MEMBER, AND, doesn’t have “regular access” to your car. Now, “regular access” is the questionable point. So if your neighbor drives you to the hospital, in MOST cases, you’re covered (not them, mind you, but YOU) if there is an accident. But if your girlfriend takes your car to her work once a week or so, she’s not. Because the vehicle is used regularly by her. Progressive defines ‘regular use’ as once a month, or more than 10 times a year.

If your insurance company says YOUR policy ONLY COVERS LISTED DRIVERS, then some stranger on the internet that hasn’t seen your policy, who says otherwise, is talking out of their hat. Take the opinion of the person who’s READ your policy, over that of someone who hasn’t.

And sorry, OklaTom, I know you’re good at insurance and all, but to say carte blanche “insurance follows the car, everyone is covered” is NOT TRUE. I’ve SEEN LOTS OF EXCEPTIONS FIRST HAND.

If you shop around and compare quotes, you can save a good amount of money.
when i got my first policy i was just so anxious that I just used whatever my parents had.
The comparison sites are the easiest way to get quotes fast, and i wish I did this at first.

    Good luck.
