I’m 18 and I need to start paying for my own car insurance. Any suggestions for lowering the cost? I live in New York which means my parents are finacially responsible for me until I’m 21. I know that everyone says to try and stick it out but that is not an option. I’m going to be living with a close friend and we need to keep our expenses to a minimum. Any tips concerning car insurance, OR health insurance too would be great.

progressive.com compares rates. Go to their website and put in your info. THe website helps set up payment procedures also.Geico is usually affordable, and has a fairly good reputation. There are other ‘cheap’ insurance companies, but they are often a case of getting what you pay for.

Health insurance is but a dream for the working class.

Call the Answer Center @ 1877 855 8111. You need a pin # KJPM8 and my last name Sherbert. The person will run a quote for you with 30-40 different companies. They will quote you the lowest cost insurance companies.

One way to keep car insurance low is to increase your deductible.

Keeping you on your parents auto insurance is probly your best bet. You can get multi-car discount and multi-line discount if their homeowners ins is with the same company. If you take renters insurance or life insurance with your auto insurance company most companies give you a discount on the auto insurance. Also, ask about a Good Student Discount if you get a B average or better.

For health insurance, the cheapest way to get coverage is through your employer – so find a job that offers health insurance.

For car insurance, if you drive an old beater, that’s paid for, it will save you a TON if you can only carry minimum liability on it. It’s still not going to be cheap, because of your age and location, but it will be half or less than half of what you’d need to carry if you had a new car, or a car with a loan on it.
