Surely if the latter is socialism/communism then the former must be the same….
@ mopar Mike: You’re right. But outside of NYC, how easy is it to used public transportation? Would you walk to work everyday? Our capitalism forces you to have a car which then forces you to buy insurances. So if one is socialism than the other must be the same.
Use a better argument to make me look stupid youngin’…

Good point…I never thought about that.

Both are wrong.. but the pricetag is a little bit different in case you haven’t noticed.
May 11, 2010 @ 3:48 am
Don’t think that doesn’t piss me off. I think at years end, if I didn’t have an accident, I should get half of my money back.

Your not forced to buy car insurance. You can choose not to drive ,take public transportation, walk or ride a bike. Very poor argument. God bless.

Glad you asked. Ohio you are required to have car insurance. That did not matter to the, not once but two accidents I have been in. Both uninsured motorists. Both wound up in court. With fines of under $175 for the one (it was her 4th time caught). And the other got a ticket. So, my point is, required or not some people do not care. And no government policy is strong enough to make them care.

Because a poor person can sell his car and walk or take the bus.
May 11, 2010 @ 5:38 am
No difference really. Both are examples of government trying to mandate what should be personal responsibility.
May 11, 2010 @ 5:39 am
Well, your not forced. You don’t have to drive…..
May 11, 2010 @ 6:37 am
Well, when the Republicans endorse people being forced to buy insurance policies at exorbitant rates, it’s “free market capitalism”.
May 11, 2010 @ 6:52 am
IT ISN’T, IT’S THE SAME.
May 11, 2010 @ 7:07 am
Mandatory car insurance is to protect others, not you. This is proven by the fact that only Liability insurance is mandatory. Everything else is optional. In other words, you can endanger yourself, but not others. But if you don’t have health insurance, you’re only endangering yourself, not others. That’s the difference, and that’s why it shouldn’t be mandatory. And all this talk of fines for those who don’t buy health insurance is a crock. If they don’t have the money for insurance, where are they going to get money for a fine? Typical government idiocy!
May 11, 2010 @ 7:20 am
Actually, I’m not aware of anywhere you are forced to insure your car. In most states you are required to carry liability insurance to cover someone else if you cause an injury or damage to his property. Basically, to have the privilege of driving you have to be prepared to cover the damages you might cause.
At any rate, it’s a state requirement. Depending on their individual constitutions states might be able to require health insurance. The U.S. Constitution prohibits the Federal Government from doing things like that.
May 11, 2010 @ 7:59 am
Driving is a privilege and choice people are free to make. If someone can’t afford the minimum liability insurance then they can’t afford to drive and must make another choice. But if someone can’t afford health insurance you don’t punish them by fining them thousands of dollars. Fined for being poor? That’s a Debtor’s Prison mentality, and typical of this administration.
0bama is obviously in bed with the insurance companies and the medical & drug industry, trying to guarantee their income with our tax money. The trick isn’t to guarantee their obscenely high income, it’s to get them to lower their fees to a reasonable rate. Drug companies frequently charge a markup of thousands of percentage points, raking in obscene profits for drugs people absolutely must have in order to survive.
And why rag on Mopar Mike? Are you truly so ignorant you believe New York is the only city with public transportation? My wife & I live in a comparatively small town 100 miles from the nearest big city. I drive, she does not. If I can’t give her a ride, then she calls a cab or takes the bus. Yes, bus. Even our small town has them, just like many small towns across America.
Fail. Try again.

You should be forced to buy car insurance because if you run into my car and smash it up, I should be able to get paid.
If you run into a tree and smash yourself up, you should be forced to have health insurance so I do not have to pay with my tax money since the hospital can not refuse to treat you.
May 11, 2010 @ 9:21 am
There is no difference. Both are a result of people not taking individual responsibility. So they’re basically punishment.
