Probably a lot more than you think. You will need to call your insurance agent and ask him/her. That’s what they are there for!

The cost will go up A LOT — between $1000 and $2000 a year. Young drivers generally have higher accident rates than older drivers, so the insurance companies will set the price accordingly.

I would first look to find every discount possible, the two most popular being the good student discount and driving school. I would also strongly recommend getting 4-6 quotes from other insurance companies, because you might find one that gives you a good deal.

You can either go to an independent agent (who has deals with many different companies), or go around the internet (Google “auto insurance quotes” and you will find hundreds of websites that will give you multiple quotes.) Once you are finished, go back to your original insurance company with your best quote and see if they are willing to beat it.

This sounds like a lot of legwork, but it will be worth the effort.

    Different varibles.

Is the car paid for? It would be cheaper to have just liability.
Could be cheaper if your listed as part time driver.
You age. Your sex. Drivers education class.
You and your Mom need to talk to a couple of different insurance companies to see who you can get the best deal from on a person as young as you.

For car insurance the quickest method to get a cheap quote is do a auto policy comparison. Be sure to choose the same coverage levels, you can get an accurate quote to compare against others. Use the same zip code, car make and model, mileage and driving history to ensure you get an apples to apples comparison. To get easy auto quotes, go to http://www.goodinternetdeals.com/Auto-Insurance.html and you can compare the major auto insurance companies.

As long as you haven’t had many accidents you should get great rates.

    Hi,

Your parents insurance will probably increase quite a bit. Not to mention it puts a lot of responsibility on them. i would suggest getting your own policy. It might be a little more expensive (although not necessarily, depending on your provider), but it’ll definitely be better for you to start building your own credit and independence in the long run. Check out the source I listed below. They have great rates, even for young drivers, and can probably help you out. Call your parents insurance agency and find out what the difference will be (it depends on your car and other variables) and then get some individual quotes before you decide what to do. Good luck!

    Bella
