Recently my friend was driving my car while I was in the passenger seat. He does not like my driving, so I let him drive my car. While we were on the freeway he rearended another vehicle, causing damage to my car and the other car. My insurance is going to cover the damage for both my vehicle and the other vehicle, but to repair my car there is $1,000 deductible, and there is probably $3,000 damage to my car. Given these facts, how appropriate would it be to ask my friend to pay the deductible?

IF HE’S A FRIEND HE WILL OFFER TO PAY, BUT IF HE IS A RELATIVE HE’S NO FRIEND, GET USE TO IT.

How about splitting it? He was driving, but you gave him permission.

Talk to your friend and explain that since he was driving, he should pay the deductible, as the accident was his doing. If he won’t, then he’s no friend of yours. I was going to say you should slash his tires or something else mean but decided against it.

Yes, clearly he rear-ended the other vehicle so it’s his fault.

I would most certainly ask him to pay the deductible. If he says no, he’s no friend at all. It’s his fault that you’re faced with a insurance deductible, plus the long term effects of having made an insurance claim that may impact your cost of insurance for years to come.

just wondering, would there be different answers if there was no issue about him not liking her driving, and instead she just wanted him to drive because she didn’t feel well or just didn’t want or like to drive? in essence he would have then been doing her a favor, but it was still his fault.
