Doesn’t your regular car insurance cover liability? And isn’t the coverage on a gold/platinum credit card enough for collision? Are the add-on costs at the car rental place just a rip-off or actually valuable insurance?

If you have the insurance through one of the sources you mentioned, then you don’t need it for the rental car.

Everyone does not have it, however, so for those people, it is a good idea.

As long as you have full coverage on your own vehicle in your name you do NOT need the rental car insurance. Your insurance follows you. Ive worked in body shops and of course very close with rental agencies and its a total line of bull they feed renters just to get more money out of them. If you are still unsure call your insurance company and ask them what would happened if you were to be in an accident with a rental.

If you already have car insurance and your credit card covers rental cars there is not really any good reason. Just beware – if you get in an accident, your car insurance covers things first, then your credit card is secondary insurance in case the car insurance does not cover it. This means your personal car insurance rates will go up since you will have a claim. Also, the rental car will charge you rental fees while the car is being fixed, and neither regular car insurance or credit card will cover that expense.

Still, at the rates the rental car companies charge (20 bucks per day or so) it is not worth it unless you wreck rental cars a lot (in which case the rental car company may not rent you a car at all!).

yeah, probably, the other person is probably not going to pay for it (probably, it deepens on the person)

It’s a RIP OFF!!! My daughter used to work as an agent at an AVIS and they always asked her to push for the insurance (making comments under her breath…etc)
