I live in California.
I have a 1987 Bronco that has expired tags on it that I want to sell. I would like to get the tags current before I sell it, but it seems in order to register it I must have insurance on the vehicle. It just seems like a waste of money to insure something I’m just going to sell right away.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

well, you should have insurance on it anyway, so that it is covered if people want to take it for test drive. So throw insurance on it for a month while you sell it.

    You must have insurance.

You can get short-term insurance and cancel it as soon as the vehicle is sold.

    You must have insurance.

Get the minimums and cancel it when you sell,

Unfortunately, Ca. law is that you must have insurance on your vehicle. DMV has a system that checks for insurance on the vehicle. If vehicle insurance doesn’t show, registration is suspended and vehicle is subject to tow. You could pay the registration renewal fees, and keep the receipts to show the buyer that reg fees are paid up to date. This way, your wages & bank acct dont get garnished by the franchise tax board. Your registration is still suspended, but fees are paid. New owner can insure. But seller is still reponsible for smog. If you choose this route, make sure vehicle is not parked on the street. Cause even though fees are paid, vehicle must have tags or temp. operating permit to be on street. Your best off selling ‘as is’, or dishing out the whole shabang for all of it.!

    Hi,

Good post. I had some problems with my car after I had an accident. My Insurer wanted to raise my rates $525 a year! I’ve never even gotten a speeding ticket!

I looked for a new provider and found this website:

    http://www.ffrumster.com

They compare all of the major insurance providers and give you the best deal. I ended up saving over $300 from what I was previously paying (that’s $825 a year!).

    Good Luck
