Congestion on British roads is an ever increasing problem.  With rises in population numbers and more people being able to afford running a car than ever before, it is not surprising that the roads are becoming busier. But busier roads do not just mean longer journey times; they also tend to result in higher accidents rates. The government have attempted to tackle this problem through a series of nationwide advertising campaigns and by placing awareness signs along the roads. However these methods may not be getting through to everyone with many drivers still driving unsafely and causing accidents. Those drivers who are more likely to be involved in road traffic accidents are those with limited experience – typically younger drivers. Statistics show that one in five drivers is involved in car accidents within six months of passing their test.

To try and reduce these figures Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly, announced last May that a number of new measures were going to be trialled. Initially thoughts were around raising the legal age limit for driving from 17 to 18, or introducing a ‘graduated licensing’ scheme, which would place restrictions on new drivers. However none of these ideas have come to fruition; instead a new driving course is to be introduced to 14-16 years, which will heavily emphasise the importance of safe driving.

The course will first be rolled out around the beginning of 2009, in certain geographical areas, in order to assess is success. It will begin by teaching young drivers about the basics and how to carry them out safety.  It will then progress to more advanced driving techniques such as being able to predict the intentions of other drivers on the roads. Whilst the driving test with and the theory test have both  undergone big changes over the last ten years and now incorporate further tests to ensure the suitability of new drivers, the accident rates are still high for this demographic. Introducing this course will give learners more time over which they can practice and perfect their driving skills prior to taking their test. In addition further courses are due to be introduced for those who have passed their test but wish to develop their skills further. It is hoped that these tests will be recognised by other bodies and result in some good young driver insurance deals for those who have passed.

The summer is finally before us. If you plan to spend your summer vacation on the road, you’ll need to do various preparations in order to enjoy a safe and pleasant journey. You’ve probably thought about making your car for the summer and plan your route, but have you considered to revise your auto insurance policy?

It is important to have good coverage at any time. However, if you drive more during the summer, your vehicle will be necessarily more likely to be involved in an accident or suffer a mechanical failure. Therefore, it is even more important to have a good insurance policy when driving in summer.

If you have not already done so, you may want to bring along some optional coverages such as auto insurance or collision insurance coverage. Collision insurance covers the repair or replacement of your vehicle when it is damaged during an accident. The all-risk insurance, for its part, covers theft of your vehicle and damage due to fires, floods, falling objects or the collision with an animal.

In addition to these optional coverages that allow you to drive with peace of mind, some insurers offer an optional roadside assistance. This service offers quick assistance in case of emergency, your vehicle runs out of gas or even experience a mechanical failure. Where appropriate, the costs of towing or rental of a replacement vehicle may also be covered. This service will help you cope with unexpected road during your summer vacation.

If you are traveling in a rental car rather than in your own vehicle, you do not necessarily need to purchase auto insurance offered by the rental company. Before accepting such insurance, ask. It is possible that you’re already covered for driving a rental car with your current insurance policy. If you’re not already, you might consider the purchase of such coverage.
Take note that insurance for tuner cars is usually much more expensive than the insuance for normal, stock and unmodofied cars.

If you plan to travel to another province or in another country, you should make sure that your coverage is valid in those places where you travel before you leave. Since the minimum amount of coverage is not always the same everywhere, you should ask rather than risk finding yourself facing an insurance policy invalid in case of emergency.

A quick and easy way to find the insurance policy perfect for your summer vacation is to use a comparison service insurance rates offered on various websites. This service allows you to compare various rates and benefits offered by several companies to make informed choices and find a policy that meets your needs.

Once you have adapted your auto insurance to your needs, you’re ready to get started on the road for an unforgettable holiday, knowing that you will be protected, regardless of the problems you might face.

When driving around school, get to school five minutes early and leave five minutes late to avoid the mad dash into and out from the parking lots. Many accidents happen when kids are rushing around. If your school lot does not have angled parking spaces, park in a space you can pull straight out of instead of having to back out. Backing out in crowed lots is tricky.  Take extra care to watch for kids getting on and off school buses.  Always stop for school buses with flashing lights.

When driving around town, avoid making left hand turns across busy intersections that don’t have turn signals. It takes a while to learn how to gage the oncoming traffic.  Don’t make assumptions about what other drivers are going to do. The only thing you can assume about another driver with a turn signal on is that he has a turn signal on. He might not be turning at all and forgot to turn it off the last time he used it or has changed his mind.  When there’s an obstruction in your lane, wait for oncoming traffic to clear before you pull around. Just because someone’s blocking your lane doesn’t mean you have the right of way in the next or oncoming lane.  Watch out for aggressive drivers and try to stay out of their way.  Don’t do anything that will cause another car’s driver to slam on the brakes such as pulling out in front of him or swerving into his lane.

When driving in the country, watch out for deer and other animals.  If you see a deer approaching, slow down and flash your lights repeatedly.  Often, the deer will run away. Also, if you see one deer, watch out for others close by–they often travel in pairs or groups.

When driving in bad weather, be sure your headlights on to increase your visibility.  Double the space you normally leave between you and the next car. You’ll need more space to stop on slick roads.  Braking in bad weather can be tricky. When braking on wet roads: (1) if you have ABS (anti-lock) brakes, do not pump brakes (2) if you skid with non ABS brakes and your wheels lock up, let up on the brakes to unlock the wheels, then brake gently.  Listen to radio traffic reports and adjust your travel plans accordingly. Keep windows and windshield clear. Make sure wipers are working.   Make sure your car has gas in it. Don’t ride around with the gauge on empty–who knows where you might get stranded.
