State:

At some point in your life you would have wished for the ground to open up and swallow you whole, but for one unfortunate driver this actually happened while driving along a motorway in China. The Daily Mail website has reported that a motorist had a “lucky escape after being swallowed by a sinkhole as he travelled along a busy motorway in Nanchang City, China”.

Shocking images of the scene show a 13ft-wide hole, which appeared when the vehicle’s front wheels sunk into a chasm on the busy road. This isn’t however the first glorified pothole story to emerge in China recently, there have been another seven sinkholes discovered in the past two weeks alone.

There are some holes you just can’t dig yourself out of, and I think this might have been one of them. The motorist had no choice but to wait in his car until he was rescued and his vehicle was lifted to safety. Can you imagine waiting for that perfect summer day to get your classic pride and joy out and take it for a spin along the motorway, and then from out of no-where a huge pothole opens up and swallows up your pride and joy! That’s when you sit then waiting to be rescued praying you remembered to take out breakdown cover with your classic car insurance.

A spokesperson for the freeway management office said “experts on site suspected that the sudden collapse of an underground cave created by eroded limestone caused the sinkhole”, which doesn’t really help the poor motorist who was performing a balancing act with his car.

Us Brits moan about potholes causing havoc on our roads, but according to these recent events, China has it a lot worse!

It’s a sad fact that if you want to know the true value of a classic car, the best people to ask are the criminals who spend their time eyeing and sizing them up. If you think you spend a lot of time admiring your pride and joy the chances are there is someone else keeping a watchful eye over it too, which is why you need to spend as much time protecting it from thieves as you do from the weather.

Although there are many anti-theft devices available that classic car owners could use to deter thieves, there is an element of vanity in not wanting to spoil the aesthetics of such a vintage motor. Many owners are so proud of their classics that they like to have them on show and even enter them into competitions. Having the vehicles VIN etched into the vehicle’s windows or fitting anti-theft devices might be a good option for modern cars, but not for award winning classics.

According to a recent survey conducted by Sureterm Direct, one of the largest classic car insurance brokers in the UK, the top 3 most stolen classic vehicles are the Volkswagen Campervan, Volkswagen Beetle and the Nissan Sunny. The same survey revealed that classics from the 90′s proved to be the most attractive to car thieves, with over 50% of the claims made relating to some of the most recognised classics of the 90′s.

Some things in life are easy enough to replace, but most classic car enthusiasts will tell you that every vintage vehicle plays a unique part in motoring history and is therefore irreplaceable. This makes losing such a valued possession even more upsetting and in the majority of cases the vehicle is either never recovered or it is returned to its owner in poor condition.

Although looking for classic car insurance may not be appealing, neither is picking up the pieces after your pride and joy is stolen. Protect yourself against thieves by calling Sureterm Direct free on 0800 999 2030 or click here for a tailored classic car insurance quote.

“There are few car marques that can boast such a history of aesthetically exquisite machines as Alfa Romeo”, according to IrishTimes.com, as well as having glamorously evocative roll-off-the-tongue names. Giulia, Spider, Giulietta and Alfetta are just a few of the names that put other carmakers to shame.

With such an impressive portfolio of great automobiles it’s no surprise the number of ‘alfaholics’ around the world. Around a hundred of these turned up at the Classic Car Live show in Mondello last weekend, having been drawn in by the Alfa legacy, as well as the sunshine.

The NY Times website has reported that it is “particularly the enthusiasts, collectors and racing fans who hold the Italian marquee especially close to their hearts”. For the fanatics who remember the “Duetto that Dusty Hoffman drove in the hit 1967 film The Graduate, or the hard-core enthusiasts who know all about Alfa’s win in the Millie Miglia in 1938, the mystique lives on”.

According to the NY Times website, “much of the passion that remains for Alfa stems from its fire breathing, race-dominating cars of the 1930′s, referred to as the cars that were the Ferraris of the era”.

Alfa’s haven’t always been known for their reliability, but this hasn’t stopped them having a century of success. Brewster Thackeray, president of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club USA said, “Alfa’s have always been somewhat eccentric, but we put up with the cars being demanding and sometimes temperamental in exchange for the joy they deliver”.
