Right. NO ONE will sell you rental car coverage without either collision or comprehensive. And if you only buy one of them, the rental only kicks in if there’s a covered loss – it does NOT kick in for mechanical breakdown.

You acted as your own agent with Geico. Now you’re going to have to go to a REAL agent, and explain what you want. They’ll be able to find a policy that covers your van for collision – and rental – even if it costs more.

You can purchase the physical damage coverage from the rental car company. The good thing about doing that is that there is usually no deductible so, should you have an accident with your rented vehicle, you don’t have to worry about any additional out of pocket expenses. You should however, contact your insurance company and ask them if they have a coverage for the rental car that covers the expense for the time it is out of service after an accident.
