my car was stolen sometime between tuesday evening and wednesday morning. i reported it to the police and my insurance company that morning. wednesday afternoon i received a message from my insurance company that my car had been recovered. to this point i have not received any further updates from either the police or the insurance company.

what could be causing the delay? is it normal for the police to not contact a person if their stolen property is recovered?

    Are you for real? Do you have any idea of how much investigation goes into car theft? Do you know how many people stage their own car theft in order to collect on the insurance? Where were you when your car was stolen? Was it used in a crime? Are there any fingerprints other than yours on the vehicle? How was the car stolen? Where was it when it was stolen? Was the car stripped after the theft? etc etc etc etc etc etc………………… So did you call the insurance company? Did you call the police department? Hmmmmmmmmmm.

    You should be on the phone and asking both the police and the insurance company what is going on. Did your insurance company provide you with a rental car? Did they say what kind of condition did they find it in? Ask them, somebody knows where it is at, and what kind of shape it is in.

    Do that as soon as you can. You may have to wait until Tuesday now that it is Labor Day weekend.

    Yes, this is normal procedure. The police have to investigate and determine if your car wasn’t used in a crime, etc. Once that is cleared the insurance appraiser will have to inspect and prepare a repair estimate or determine if the vehicle is repairable or not. If it’s declared a total loss they will then have to establish a value and THEN make you an offer. Usually the bigger insurers that have their own claims staff are much quicker and can usually be ready to make you an offer within a week. Smaller companies have to sublet the claims/appraisel work and can take quite a bit longer.
